(Simpsonville, KY) Near the rolling pastures where Kentucky’s thoroughbreds are raised, veterinarian Dr. Steven Allday believes he can extend the careers of not only his thoroughbred champion patients, but also horses of all breeds and ages.
Dr. Allday is the developer of LubriSyn™ (sodium hyauronate), a daily oral supplement to improve joint health. Given daily, LubriSyn provides horses with a steady, even dosage of hyaluronic acid (HA) to increase the viscosity of their joint fluid which allows them to move more comfortably. “Too many clients wait until the horse is showing clinical signs of pain and discomfort to treat for joint health. The damage is done at that point. An early maintenance program of LubriSyn can help keep the joint healthy,” says Dr Allday.
Dr. Allday has treated many top thoroughbreds, and many of today’s champions are already using LubriSyn, including Kentucky Oaks winner Lemons Forever. But Dr. Allday’s lameness expertise encompasses a desire to benefit all types of horses, like the quarter horses he grew up with on his parents’ Maryland horse farm in the 1960s.
Born and raised on the farm, Dr. Allday had an early interest in veterinary medicine. A chance meeting with Dr. Edwin A. Churchill when Dr. Allday was a teenager inspired him to attend veterinary school. Watching Churchill, a world-renowned lameness expert and founder of the New Bolton Equine Center at the University of Pennsylvania, examine one of the Allday family’s mares fired the teen’s curiosity and deepened his empathy for animals. Some years later, Dr. Allday received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1985 from Texas A & M University.
Dr. Allday began his practice in New York but soon joined the New Jersey practice of one of Dr. Churchill’s protégés, Dr. Kenneth Seeber, who was a popular standardbred veterinarian at the Meadowlands Racetrack. Eventually Dr. Allday returned to New York, working at the thoroughbred tracks and developing a reputation among top trainers for diagnosing and treating lameness problems. He also worked with prominent show horse stables and cared for some of the world’s finest jumping horses.
Dr. Allday was determined to develop a safer, more practical way of using HA for improved joint function. After years of testing a fluid with a high molecular weight ideal for joint therapy and replacing the joint’s synovial fluid, Dr. Allday has started making LubriSyn available through equine and large-animal veterinarians across the country, and to the public through the product’s website.
Dr. Allday, as well as many other satisfied horse owners, believes that using LubriSyn™ daily is vital and extremely beneficial in the care of all types of horses. These daily doses of HA will help horses, aside from breed or age, become more mobile, more comfortable and more likely to realize their potential.
